[ Proclamation No. 499, November 29, 1989 ]

DECLARING DECEMBER 1, 1989, AS “NATIONAL AIDS AWARENESS DAY”

WHEREAS, the world today is faced with a new terrifying disease — AIDS or Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome, which up to today has no cure;

WHEREAS, the threat of AIDS is a global one that requires a global response;

WHEREAS, national AIDS programs already exist in nearly all countries of the world, working to inform and educate people about AIDS, how to avoid becoming infected and how to protect others;

WHEREAS, the Government of the Republic of the Philippines recognizes the serious threat of AIDS to the health and social well-being of the people of the Philippines and has undertaken a national AIDS prevention and control program;

WHEREAS, the Government of the Philippines desires to join the international community in the fight against this epidemic and to mobilize all sectors in the campaign to inform and educate people on simple precautionary measures against infection with the AIDS virus; and

WHEREAS, there is a need to focus national attention on understanding and learning about AIDS;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, CORAZON C. AQUINO, President of the Philippines, by virtue of the power vested in me by law, do hereby declare December 1, 1989, as “National AIDS Awareness Day.”

I call upon public and private offices, institutions and organizations to extend their assistance to make the observance of National AIDS Awareness Day meaningful and a success.1aшphi1
