BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE PHILIPPINES

[ Proclamation No. 1836-a, March 28, 1979 ]

WHEREAS, 707o of the Filipino people live in the rural areas and are dependent on agriculture for their living;

WHEREAS, agriculture comprises 557%, of the total labor force;

WHEREAS, agriculture continues to be the main source of exports of the Philippine economy;

WHEREAS, food constitutes almost exactly half of the cost of living of the average Filipino family;

WHEREAS, there is no national day set aside to give tribute to farmers and to present their accomplishments to the nation;

WHEREAS, the fifteenth day of May is the feast day of San Isidro De Labrador who is generally accepted as the patron saint of farmers.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, FERDINAND E. MARCOS, President of the Philippines, by the powers vested in me by the Constitution, do hereby proclaim and make as part of the law of the land that the fifteenth day of May of each year be declared as Farmers’ Day throughout the country.1aшphi1
