[ Proclamation No. 1809, December 6, 1978 ]

DECLARING THE PERIOD FROM JANUARY 29 TO FEBRUARY 4, 1979 AND THE SAME PERIOD EVERY YEAR HEREAFTER AS “ROTARY INTERNATIONAL WEEK” IN THE PHILIPPINES

WHEREAS, the Rotary movement was begun by a cross-section of businessmen and professionals united in fellowship and dedicated to the Ideal of Service to high ethical standards in business and professions, to community, to country, and to the advancement of international understanding, goodwill and peace;

WHEREAS, 60 years ago on January 29, 1919, the Rotary Club of Manila was founded to pioneer in Rotarianism not only in the Philippines but throughout Asia;

WHEREAS, the Rotary Club of Manila and its brother Rotary Clubs have, time and again, distinguished themselves worldwide and have provided three high-ranking officers of Rotary International in the persons of RI VICE-President CARLOS P. ROMULO, GIL J. PUYAT and FRANCISCO C. DELGADO;

WHEREAS, the Rotary Club of Manila in particular has pioneered in many significant endeavors, such as youth welfare by initiating the Scouting movement in the country, community welfare by initiating the cancer-consciousness movement and beautification projects in Rizal Park and Roxas Boulevard, and the first business and professional codes of ethics in the Philippines;

WHEREAS, the Rotarians in the Philippines have made notable contributions to the leadership of the country and to the progress and development of the nation;

WHEREAS, the Rotary Club of Manila will observe its 60th year with a week-long series of activities designed to bring honor and prestige to the Philippines, and further focus attention on the aspirations and achievements of our people and, it is, therefore, an event which deserves our recognition and support;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, FERDINAND E. MARCOS, President of the Philippines, by virtue of the powers vested in me by law, do hereby declare the period from January 29 to February 4, 1979 and the same period every year hereafter, as “ROTARY INTERNATIONAL WEEK” in honor of this movement.

I further enjoin the appropriate agencies of the Government, including the Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Tourism, the Metro Manila Commission, the Bureau of Immigration, the Bureau of Customs, the Bureau of Posts, and the Philippine Convention Bureau, to help assure the success of Rotary’s “DIAMOND YEAR” celebration in Manila.1aшphi1
