[ Proclamation No. 1737, May 27, 1978 ]

DECLARING 1978 AS CHESS YEAR AND AUTHORIZING THE PHILIPPINE CHESS FEDERATION TO CONDUCT A FUND CAMPAIGN DURING THE PERIOD FROM MAY 1, 1978 TO DECEMBER 31, 1978.

WHEREAS, the Republic of the Philippines has been chosen as the site of the World Chess Championship Match from July to September 1, 1978, under the auspices of the Philippine Chess Federation (PCF) and the federation internationale des echecs (FIDE);

WHEREAS, this prestigious international chess event will be participated in by no less than the World Champion Anatoly Karpov of the USSR and the Challenge Viktor Korchnoi, stateless;

WHEREAS, this event will not only contribute to the country’s efforts to promote our tourist industry for at least two months, add prestige and honor to the Philippines but also earn goodwill and gratitude of the millions of chess fans throughout the world; and

WHEREAS, financial and logistical supports are required to insure the success of this vital undertaking;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, FERDINAND E. MARCOS, President of the Philippines, do hereby declare 1978 as the Chess Year and authorize the Philippine Chess Federation to conduct a nationwide fund campaign and thus help ensure the successful hosting of the World Chess Championship Match.

All donations or contributions to and income of the fund campaign shall be exempt from income, gift, amusement and all other taxes; and the same shall further be deductible in full and shall not be included for the purposes of computing the maximum amount deductible under Sec. 30, paragraph (h), of the National Internal Revenue Code, as amended.1aшphi1

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the seal of the Republic of the Philippines to be affixed.
