[ Proclamation No. 1734, May 16, 1978 ]

PROCLAIMING THE PERIOD FROM MAY 30 TO JUNE 5 OF EVERY YEAR AS NATIONAL ENVIRONMENT WEEK

WHEREAS, the United Nations General Assembly has adopted Resolution No. 2994, dated December 15, 1972 declaring the fifth day of June of every year as World Environment Day and urging governments in the United Nations System to undertake on that day activities reaffirming their concern for preservation and enhancement of environment;

WHEREAS, the observance of World Environment Day is not only a gesture of Philippine support to the cause of enhancing world ecology, but also a recognition of the imperative need to instill environmental awareness and concern among the various sectors of Philippine society;

WHEREAS, the protection, management, development of our environment is one of the major concerns of the Government as enunciated in Presidential Decrees Nos. 1121, (Creation of the National Environmental Protection Council) 1151, (Philippine Environmental Policy) and 1152 (Philippine Environment Code); and

WHEREAS, the necessity to heighten the environmental consciousness of our people and to generate substantial participation and integration of efforts demand an extended celebration of World Environment Day;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, FERDINAND E. MARCOS, President of the Philippines, by virtue of the powers vested in me by law, do hereby declare the period from May 30 to June 5 of every year as National Environment Week. I enjoin all officials and employees of the Government and call upon all residents of the country to observe the Week with activities reaffirming their concern for the protection, management and development of our environment.

Proclamation No. 1149, dated June 1, 1973, is hereby repealed.1aшphi1
