[ Proclamation No. 1732, May 8, 1978 ]

DECLARING THE SO-CALLED “MONKEY EATING EAGLE” AS THE PHILIPPINE EAGLE.

WHEREAS, one of the most marvelous and cherished dwellers of our forests through the ages is a bird of great strength and beauty, scientifically known as Pithecophaga Jeferyi, which has been popularly referred to as the “monkey eating eagle”; and

WHEREAS, this bird is now a world-renowned and highly prized species and the reference to it as the “monkey eating eagle” denigrates its qualities, for which reason it has been proposed that this bird, in whose rarity and confident bearing the Philippines can take pride, should be renamed and should now be called the “Philippine eagle”;

WHEREAS, it is an eagle that can be found only in the Philippines;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, FERDINAND E. MARCOS, President of the Philippines, by virtue of the powers vested in me by law, hereby proclaim and declare that henceforth the bird which has been called the “monkey eating eagle” is renamed and shall henceforth be referred to as the “Philippine eagle.”

All government offices, agencies, and instrumentalities are hereby enjoined to take note of the contents of this proclamation.1aшphi1 The directive is particularly addressed to the Department of Education and Culture, the Department of Natural Resources, and all other government offices whose functions are related to the management of our natural resources, the social growth and development of our people, and the enhancement of our cultural heritage.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the seal of the Republic of the Philippines to be affixed.
