[ Proclamation No. 1539, March 25, 1976 ]

DECLARING NAPOLEON V. ABUEVA, PABLO ANTONIO, LAMBERTO V. AVELLANA, VICTORIO G. EDADES, JOVITA FUENTES, LEONOR OROSA GOQUINCO AND NICK JOAQUIN AS NATIONAL ARTISTS

WHEREAS, the Constitution provides for the State patronage of the arts and letters;

WHEREAS, the category known as National Artists was created under Proclamation No. 1001 dated April 27, 1972, and since then, eight artists have been given this award for having excelled in their respective fields, each producing a body of work that has enhanced the Filipino’s cultural heritage;

WHEREAS, such pre-eminent achievements deserve the recognition and acknowledgment of our government in pursuit of its policy of preserving and developing Filipino culture and national identity; and

WHEREAS, the works of Napoleon V. Abueva, Pablo Antonio, Lamberto V. Avellana, Victorio G. Edades, Jovita Fuentes, Leonor Orosa Goquinco and Nick Joaquin are reflective of this pre-eminent excellence, and of that national genius that contributes to the artistic heritage of the Philippines and of the world;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, FERDINAND E. MARCOS, President of the Philippines, by virtue of the powers vested in me by law, and upon recommendation of the National Artist Awards Committee and pursuant to Proclamation No. 1001, as amended by Proclamation No. 1144 dated April 27, 1972 and May 15, 1973, respectively, do hereby declare Napoleon V. Abueva, Pablo Antonio, Lamberto V. Avellano, Victorio G. Edades, Jovita Fuentes, Leonor Orosa Goquinco and Nick Joaquin as National Artists.
