[ Proclamation No. 1473, August 6, 1975 ]

DECLARING AUGUST 1-8 AND EVERY FIRST WEEK OF AUGUST THEREAFTER AS “ASEAN WEEK”

WHEREAS, the Philippine Government shares the conviction of the other ASEAN member countries on the merits of regional cooperation to accelerate economic growth, social progress and cultural development, and to promote regional peace and stability by means of collective efforts and mutual help, as contained in the Bangkok Declaration of 8 August 1967;

WHEREAS, in facing the need to meet the challenges of world developments, especially in Southeast Asia, ASEAN has always been a cornerstone in Philippine foreign policy;

WHEREAS, the Association has entered its Development Stage, taking advantage of the improved climate of cooperation, providing the necessary impetus for intensifying collaborative efforts in its varied projects;

WHEREAS, ASEAN has gained recognition in the international for a as an effective vehicle to promote the common interest of the member countries;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, FERDINAND E. MARCOS, President of the Philippines, do hereby declare 1-8 August, 1975 and every first week of August thereafter as “ASEAN Week”.
