[ Proclamation No. 1468, July 27, 1975 ]

PROCLAIMING SEPTEMBER 30, 1975 AS THE DAY FOR THE NATIONAL OBSERVANCE OF THE 40TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE GRANT OF WOMEN’S SUFFRAGE IN THE PHILIPPINES.

WHEREAS, the United Nations General Assembly has declared 1975 as International Women’s Year in recognition of women’s contribution in the development of international peace and cooperation between States;

WHEREAS, the Filipino nation early in its history recognized the importance of women’s increasing contribution to the development of the country and therefore included in the Constitution of the Commonwealth of the Philippines, ratified on May 14, 1935, provisions for the granting of women’s suffrage;

WHEREAS, in the 1930’s, by virtue of Act No. 4112 of the Philippine Legislative, which took effect on January 1, 1935, the Filipino women became eligible to all public offices;

WHEREAS, by virtue of Commonwealth Act No. 34, which was approved on September 30, 1936, and of the ratification of the Plebiscite favoring women’s suffrage in the Philippines on April 30, 1937, the Filipino women have enjoyed the right of suffrage for forty years, contributing not only to the economic development of the country but also to the development of international friendly relations and cooperation and to the strengthening of world peace;

WHEREAS, the Filipino women have also contributed to the social, political and cultural development of the country;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, FERDINAND E. MARCOS, President of the Republic of the Philippines, by virtue of the power vested in me by law, do hereby proclaim September 30, 1975 as the day for the national observance of the 40th anniversary of the grant of women’s suffrage in the Philippines.
