[ Proclamation No. 282, August 6, 1964 ]

DECLARING THE LAST WEEK OF AUGUST OF EVERY YEAR AS BARRIO OFFICIALS WEEK

WHEREAS, the heart of the Philippines is in the barrio which is the foundation of our economic and democratic way of life;

WHEREAS, the progress and welfare of every barrio in the Philippines depends to a large extent upon the leadership and devotion to duty of the members of the barrio council; and

WHEREAS, the role of our barrio officials in nation-building is a continuous process of self-sacrifice;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, DIOSDADO MACAPAGAL, President of the Philippines, in recognition of the constant sacrifices of barrio officials for the welfare, progress, and prosperity of the barrio people, do hereby declare the last week of August of every year as “Barrio Officials Week.”

Every mayor is hereby enjoined to hold programs during Barrio Officials Week honoring the barrio officials and to create a citizens committee to select during said Week the most outstanding barrio council, barrio captain, and/or barrio councilman of his city or municipality.

The Barrio Leaders Association of the Philippines is also hereby designated to coordinate the observance of Barrio Officials Week on a nationwide scale in cooperation with government agencies and private civic organizations serving the rural areas.

Proclamation No. 69, dated August 8, 1960, is hereby revoked.1aшphi1
